Why This Book

Volume 2, Practice & Answer Writing: practise building, checking and explaining a tax answer independently.

Volume 2 · Practice & Answer Writing

Can you build a tax answer when the worked solution is closed?

Singapore Taxation: Practice & Answer Writing was written for the gap between following an explanation and producing an answer independently. It gives the reader a way to practise selecting the relevant facts, arranging a computation, checking the working and explaining the conclusion.

Its primary reader is a candidate preparing for the Singapore Chartered Accountant Qualification (SCAQ) Taxation module who has begun learning the rules and needs more practice applying them. It is especially useful when a completed solution looks familiar, but a blank worksheet is difficult to start.

Make the reasoning visible

A correct final amount does not always show that the method is sound. An omitted receipt and an incorrectly included item can cancel each other out. When the amounts change, the same method fails. Case B uses this problem to make the reader examine classifications and intermediate totals, rather than accept the final number alone.

Volume 2 separates the attempt from the explanation. The reader first makes the decisions, then compares them with the worked answer and tests the method again when a fact changes.

  1. 01AttemptClassify the facts, set out the working and write a conclusion before opening the answer.
  2. 02DiagnoseFind the first error in classification, placement, calculation or explanation.
  3. 03Try againClose the answer and rebuild it, then test the method with changed facts.

Who this volume is for

If this describes your studyHow this volume helps
You understand a worked example but struggle to begin alone.Use the separate facts and attempt worksheets to practise constructing the answer yourself.
Your answer is wrong, but you cannot see where it went wrong.Compare the decisions and intermediate totals, then repair the earliest incorrect step.
You need practice that responds to your weaker areas.Use focused units and changed facts, then return to the linked Volume 1 topic when a rule needs review.

Practice with a route back to the concept

The book brings together three integrated cases covering personal income tax, corporate income tax and GST return preparation. Focused practice units and multiple choice questions provide shorter opportunities to check understanding. Shared topic numbers connect the exercises to Volume 1.

Past paper references and examiner feedback help readers select further practice from the original examination materials. These references are study aids; the book does not reproduce a complete official suggested answer collection. Historical questions and exercises retain their stated years and assumptions.

Choose it for the practice you need

Volume 2 is an optional practice companion to Volume 1. If the rules and calculation structure are still unfamiliar, begin with Concepts & Worked Examples. If you can follow the explanation and now want to produce your own working, this volume provides the next stage of practice.

You do not need to buy both volumes simply because they form a series. Read the sample, attempt a problem and decide whether the method addresses the difficulty you are experiencing. Volume 2 is designed to be used alongside the explanations in Volume 1 and the original official examination papers.

Try the method before choosing the book

The Volume 2 sample includes the complete Case B and its diagnostic review. On the sample page, try identifying the errors in an answer that reaches the correct total, then see what happens when one fact changes.
